Good advice on brands there and they are nice to newbies. Also, if you want to use it only in a table, the plunge is less important. You should check and see what size bits it can use, and if 1/2″ and 1/4″ that’s a plus. It’s also pretty easy to make your own table if you don’t want anything fancy. I’ve gotten several over the years for $10-15., though you’d have to add the fence and featherboards. I tend to favor more expensive routers with both a plunge and a regular base. You don’t use a plunge base with a router table. It makes a world of difference for many projects. For trim and handheld, 1/4″ can be fine, but if I were going use a handheld router, I’d want a plunge base for sure. Generally, people who put routers in a table use 1/2″ bits. 1/2″ bits are far more stable and do a better job. I think that it only takes 1/4″ shank bits and this could be a big deal, since it’s better to have one that will take 1/2″ bits and 1/4″ bits. Tom, one thing to consider is the size router bits it will take.
